The short answer
New to Warlocks? You win by attrition. You stack damage-over-time spells (DoTs) on a target, let a demon pet tank or fight, and trade your own health for mana with Life Tap, then drain the health back. Forever made this style stronger: its DoTs scale with your gear far better than your direct nukes do.
Glossary of the terms on this page
- DoT
- Damage over time. A spell that keeps hurting the target for a while, like Corruption.
- Filler
- What you cast while your DoTs are ticking: wand, Drain Life, Shadow Bolt or Incinerate.
- Wand
- A ranged weapon that shoots for free. Early on it is your best filler.
- Spell power (SP)
- The gear stat that makes every spell hit harder.
- GCD
- Global cooldown. The 1.5 seconds after most spells before you can cast the next one.
- Proc
- A random bonus that triggers on its own, like Nightfall's free instant Shadow Bolt.
- Sacrifice
- Demonic Sacrifice: kill your own demon for a 2-hour buff. In Forever the Imp gives Shadow damage and the Succubus gives Fire damage.
- Hit cap
- Against raid bosses, 16% hit stops your spells missing. Below it, each missing 1% costs about 1% of damage.
- 28/23/0
- Talent points in Affliction, Demonology and Destruction, in that order.
- Bane and Curse
- Forever split them into two slots, so you can keep one Bane and one Curse on the same target.
- Drain tank
- Leveling by letting your pet hold the mob while Drain Life heals you.
- Levels 10 to 29Affliction, instant Corruption first, then wand as your filler. Not Shadow Bolt, not Drain Life yet. Talents matter little before 28: every build tested lands within 4% of the best.
Open the planner at level 20 - Levels 30 to 55Drain Life becomes the filler as Soul Siphon comes in. Keep leveling Affliction-first. Destruction builds kill faster but rest longer, and lose overall.
Open the planner at level 40 - Solo from 56A Demonic Knowledge splash, 28/23/0, is optional. It kills about 3 to 5% faster than deep Affliction or the wowforeverbuilds drain-tank build. If you followed this page's order, it only breaks even, so the respec is optional.
See the solo spec - Group at 60Deep Demonology, 5/31/15. Suppression 5, then Demonology down to Demonic Pact with Demonic Brand, plus Improved Shadow Bolt, Bane and Ruin. Sacrifice the Imp, keep the Succubus out, and use Searing Pain to keep Demonic Brand on the boss. About 4 to 5% ahead of Demonology with Pact and 7% ahead of Destruction at the calculator defaults. If Brand turns out to deal no damage, it is still about 1% ahead. Fire Destruction built around Incinerate is the pick when your Succubus cannot stay on the boss.
Try the raid calculator - RaceUndead levels fastest. Touch of the Grave makes it about 4% faster while leveling. In raids, Undead and a Human with a caster sword are within half a percent of each other, and a reported beta change may tip it to the Human. Every racial is small, so pick the race you like.
Compare the races - DungeonsThe first ones open at level 13. Every dungeon sits on one level line, filtered to your faction, with the ones that fit your level marked.

- Improved Shadow Bolt 5, Bane 5, Ruin 5
The group spec is a reader's build, sharpened by another reader (510Kyle) with Suppression. It leans on Demonic Brand dealing damage, which nobody has tested yet (test 7). Brand also makes the Succubus's hits high threat, so check she does not pull the boss off your tank. If it deals nothing, the build still edges out Pact by about 1% and beats Fire Destruction by 3%. If your Succubus cannot stay on the boss because of cleave, movement or deaths, play Fire Destruction 9/11/31 instead: keep up Immolate, Corruption and Bane of Doom, Conflagrate and Shadowburn on cooldown, and fill with Incinerate. On a boss immune to Fire, the group spec still leads.
Raid calculator
By default: one target at level 60, the spell ranks a trainer teaches, a mana potion and a rune on cooldown, then Life Tap for the rest, the same budget for every build. Each build uses whichever Bane scores higher. Change anything and the ranking updates.
The top two builds are within 1% of each other, which is closer than this model can call. Pick either.
Bane of Doom's scaling and Incinerate's top rank come from datamines only. Shadow Bolt 10, Corruption 7 and Immolate 8 were taught only by books from Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj, which is not on Forever's roadmap, so they count only if you tick the box. They add 1 to 2% and change no ranking. Most of deep Demonology's lead rests on Demonic Brand, which nobody has tested yet. Each 1% of hit short of the cap costs about 1% of damage.
Is this item an upgrade?
Stat weights say what one more point of each stat is worth for each build, at the calculator's settings. Crit and hit are also priced in spell power, so you can value any item. The Succubus is held fixed here, because nobody knows yet how she scales with your gear.

Why DoTs beat Shadow Bolt in Forever
Forever cut most Warlock spells to about half their Classic base damage and moved the power into spell power scaling. Direct nukes kept Classic's scaling. DoTs got a lot more of it.
Swipe the table sideways for all columns.
| Max rank | Classic base | Forever base | Forever SP scaling | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corruption | 822 | 438 | ×1.2 | Scaling up from ×1.0 |
| Bane of Agony | 1044 | 552 | ×1.6 | Scaling up from ×1.0 |
| Bane of Doom | 3200 | 1742 | ×4.0 | Datamine value only |
| Shadow Bolt | 482 to 538 | 253 to 283 | ×0.857 | Same scaling as Classic |
| Drain Life, per sec | 71 | 52 | ×0.1 per tick | Unchanged scaling |
Max rank here includes Corruption 7 and Shadow Bolt 10, which came only from books in Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj. A trainer's best at 60 is Corruption 6 (342) and Shadow Bolt 9 (237 to 265).
So: an instant DoT is worth far more per global cooldown than any nuke, at every gear level. That is why Shadow Bolt is a trap while leveling, why Bane of Doom wins at 60, and why every raid build still keeps Corruption and a Bane up.

Destruction leveling builds kill faster but rest longer, and lose
A reader asked about Improved Corruption 5, Bane 5 and Aftermath 5 with Immolate at the center, so the leveling model now has every Destruction spell and talent. From 10 to 60 that build was 0 to 11% slower than even the page's previous order, and the new order is faster still. The common 17/0/34 Destruction build was 0 to 17% slower. At 50 to 60 the Immolate build kills about 30% faster but rests four times as long: Immolate, Incinerate and Shadow Bolt cost mana that the Drain Life plan heals back. If food and water restored twice as fast as assumed, it would win by about 1 to 7% from level 50. The closest mix is speedrun-style, Destruction to Shadowburn and then Affliction for Soul Harvest: within 2 to 3.5% of the solo spec at 60, but not ahead.
Curse of the Elements rarely pays while leveling
Forever made it +4 to 10% to all magic damage from level 20, in its own slot next to Banes. On a 20-second fight, a global cooldown and 50 to 200 mana at the pull do not pay it back, and it leaves your Voidwalker's damage alone. With this page's orders it won none of 42 level checks. In a raid it is a different story: see the calculator.
Life Tap converts 430 plus Spirit, not 840
The current Wowhead tooltip and the beta client both read (430 + Spirit) at rank 6. The older reading of 840 flat is in no current source, so the calculator now defaults to 430 plus Spirit. With 100 Spirit that is 530 mana a tap. It lowers every raid build by 3 to 7% and leaves the top four in the same order. Test 1 checks it in game.
On a boss immune to Fire, play Demonology
Fire Destruction cannot be played at all there: no Immolate means no Conflagrate and no Incinerate bonus. The deep Demonology group spec leads, Pact is 0.8% behind, and everything else trails by about 19%. In Classic, several raid bosses were immune to Fire, Onyxia among them, and Onyxia's Lair is one of Forever's first raids. A reader raised this. Tick the Fire box in the calculator.
Undead Touch of the Grave is the biggest raid racial
Casters get their own version (Wowhead Forever spell 1260201, for Priest, Mage and Warlock): each spell or attack has a 10% chance to drain 5% of your max health from the target, at most once per second. Warriors, Paladins and Rogues get a 5% version. A raid Warlock makes a bit under half a damaging cast per second, so at 4,500 health that is about 9 damage per second. That is 1 to 3.4% of raid damage, depending on your build and your health from 3,000 to 8,000. A later reader report, with a video, says a recent beta update stopped DoT applications from triggering it. If so, it is a third to half a point smaller on the top build, level with or just behind a Human's caster sword. The tooltip has not changed, so the page keeps counting DoT casts until more testers confirm it. The model counts every cast, including each DoT you apply, but not the ticks. A reader tested exactly that in the beta: applying a DoT triggers it, ticks don't. The same reader caught that this page first used the 5% version.
Human Sword Specialization works on spells
Forever's version reads "+2% crit with all spells and attacks while you have a sword equipped", and Warlocks can train swords. With Ruin or Pandemic doubling crit damage, that is 1.5% more raid damage on the top build and up to 2.1% on Pact, one of the two biggest racials for a Warlock next to Undead's Touch of the Grave. It only counts if a caster sword is your best weapon.
Bane of Doom beats Bane of Agony at 60
Per second, both scale identically with spell power (4.0 over 60 s equals 1.6 over 24 s). Doom has more base damage per second and needs a global cooldown once a minute instead of every 24 seconds. Rule: cast Doom while at least a minute of the fight remains, then Agony. The result rests on the datamined 4.0 scaling. Drag the Bane of Doom slider to see where it flips.
Incinerate beats Shadow Bolt as the Destruction filler
With Bane 5/5 and Immolate up, Incinerate does 31 to 33% more per second of casting than Shadow Bolt before school buffs, which is 5 to 8% across the whole rotation. Forever reversed the sacrifice buffs from Classic: Imp now gives Shadow, Succubus gives Fire. One risk: if Improved Shadow Bolt lasts 60 seconds instead of 12, the gap closes to under 2%, and at 20% crit Shadow Bolt wins by about 2%. Try the toggle.
Demonic Knowledge is one of the best points in the class
It adds flat spell damage equal to your level, for you and your demon, while a demon is out: about 2% faster kills per point at 60. Soul Siphon and Improved Life Tap are worth a little more per point. It costs 20 Demonology points of mostly survival talents to reach, so it never pays off before 56, and from 56 it only breaks even with this page's leveling order.
Nightfall is worth little while leveling
It can proc on every Corruption tick and every Drain Life and Wrack tick. At 60 each point adds about 1.4% damage in a long fight, but one leveling kill builds up less than one proc, so it is worth under 1% per point in kill speed. The page's orders skip it.
Needs an in-game test · 5
Pulling several mobs at once barely pays
The leveling model fights one mob at a time, so a separate, rougher model checked pulls of 2 to 5 same-level mobs. Spreading DoTs over 2 or 3 mobs is 3 to 9% faster only at levels 10 to 20, and pulls of 3 or more get you killed from about level 30, or from 20 when you use area spells. Fear-kiting a second mob never wins. The one real gain is pairs tanked by the Voidwalker while you channel Hellfire, about 3% faster at 30 to 35; a survival-heavy Demonology build could stretch that to about 7%, mainly at 35, but one changed assumption flips it. It all rests on how well the Voidwalker holds several mobs, which nobody has measured. This is test 8.
Deep Demonology is the top raid spec, if Demonic Brand deals damage
A reader's pick, sharpened by reader 510Kyle into 5/31/15: Suppression 5, Demonology down to Demonic Pact, plus Improved Shadow Bolt, Bane and Ruin. Suppression's 5% hit covers every spell, so 11% hit from gear caps you. Demonic Brand turns out to be more than a threat talent: after your Searing Pain, your Succubus's next hits on that target deal extra damage that scales with spell power. The tooltip says 3 hits, the client data 6. At the calculator defaults that puts the build about 5% ahead of Pact and 7% ahead of Destruction, and 9% ahead of Pact with 6 hits. If Brand deals nothing, or scales with your demon's spell power instead of yours, it is still about 1% ahead of Pact, so it is a safe pick either way. It needs her on the boss: under about 24 damage per second from her, Fire Destruction pulls ahead. Swapping to the Imp under 35% loses about 6%, so keep the Succubus. One more unknown, raised by a reader: Brand also makes those hits high threat, so she could pull the boss off the tank. The model does not simulate threat, and nobody has tested it. This is test 7.
A Succubus leveling build, if she can hold aggro
A 5/31/0 build with the Imp sacrificed through Demonic Pact and the Succubus out stays within 4% of the Affliction route from 45 to 60, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind. The swing is who takes the hits. If the Succubus holds the mob, it becomes 9 to 16% faster, because your resting drops away. Demonic Brand is built for exactly that: Searing Pain brands the target, and your pet's next attacks on it generate high threat. The Voidwalker is 2 to 10% slower in this build and the Felhunter slowest. Suggested by a reader. This is test 6.
Stacking sacrifices with Demonic Pact
Demonic Pact only says a sacrifice is not cancelled by summoning a different demon. Nothing says a second sacrifice removes the first. If they stack, sacrificing the Imp, Felhunter and Voidwalker in turn and keeping the Succubus is about 9 to 11% faster solo. That assumes the damage Soul Link moves onto the Succubus costs nothing. If you heal her back with your own health, the edge shrinks to 1 to 3%. A curiosity, not a plan. This is test 4.
Do curses count for Soul Siphon?
Soul Siphon grows Drain Life by 12% per other Affliction effect on the target, up to three. Curses now sit in their own slot next to Banes. If a curse counts, Corruption, a Bane and Curse of Weakness max it out without Siphon Life. This is test 3.

Shadow Bolt as a leveling filler
It costs the most mana per damage of anything you have, so the resting it causes cancels the faster kills. For the page's build it won 0 of 459 level-by-level scans. It wins only inside a 17/0/34 Shadow Bolt build from level 47, and that build is about 10 to 13% slower than the plan.
Troll Warlock as a raid pick
Berserking is casting speed, and in the beta haste does not speed up DoTs or channels. It adds about 0.1% raid damage. Rapid Regeneration is a 6-second channel that breaks on any action or damage, so in PvE it is between-fights healing. In PvP it shines behind a Fear: the target runs, you channel 50% of your health back.

Demonic Pact: sacrifice the Imp, then summon the Succubus
The wowforeverbuilds Demonology guide already uses this. With Suppression 5 in place of Destructive Reach and Cataclysm, it passes Fire Destruction once the Succubus carries about 7% of your damage. The deep Demonology build adds Demonic Brand on top and leads it by about 4 to 5% at the calculator defaults. The BlizzCon demo credited her with 23 to 25% at level 38, so this is a live contender.

|---|---|---|---|
| Soul Siphon | +0.1%/pt | +2.6%/pt | in the build |

| Bane (Destruction) | +0.2%/pt | 0 | 0 |
| Nightfall, Soul Harvest, Wrack | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Nightfall reads 0 because one leveling kill builds up less than one proc; carried over between kills it would be worth about 0.6% per point at 60. Soul Harvest only pays when the best rotation finishes with Drain Soul, which it never does in the page build. The 1 Oct beta build fixed it to give its 50/100% mana regeneration, which the model already assumed. If it also speeds up drinking, it gains about 0.3% at level 47 (2 points) and nothing at other levels. The page build rests under 2.5 s a kill.

How this was checked
Limits. The beta is capped at level 30, so nobody has played a finished tree. Pet damage, mob health and damage, wand damage and rest speed are assumptions that were stress-tested, not measured. The leveling sim fights one mob at a time; a separate, rougher model covers pulls of several mobs. The Destruction leveling verdicts lean on rest speed: if food and water restore twice as fast as assumed, the Immolate build wins from level 50. The raid model counts a mana potion and a rune on cooldown, but not raid buffs. More mana regen helps every build about the same: another 100 mp5 adds 3 to 4%. Since the 1 Oct beta build, ranks far below your level get less from spell power and trigger talents less often; every rotation here uses the newest rank you can train, so this penalty should not change its numbers. Numbers will move before 4 November. Corrections are welcome.
Method, data and review
Spell data came from Wowhead's Forever spell pages, including per-tick spell power scaling, cross-checked against two beta client datamines, ForeverChanges and the ElliotWood Forever sim. Since v8, base damage and spell power coefficients come straight from the beta client's spell effect table (build 1.60.1.69893), which settled Immolate's coefficients and Life Tap's 430 plus Spirit. Talent values came from the Wowhead calculator's rank tooltips, cross-checked against five talent sites. Racial values came from Wowhead's Forever spell data. Dungeon levels came from zockify.com and lfcarry.com.
Leveling runs through an expected-value fight simulator. It folds hit and crit into every tick, applies buffs live because Forever removed snapshotting, ramps Agony the way the tooltip says, enforces talent row requirements, and scores seconds per kill including rest. Since v8 it covers every Destruction spell and talent, Curse of the Elements, Death Coil and finishers, and averages each result over mob health from 80 to 120% so a single DoT tick cannot hide a talent. A talent search across all three trees built the planner's order. The raid calculator is a steady-state spell-budget model that balances mana with Life Tap.
The research, models and this page were built with Claude, Anthropic's AI model. A separate Claude session then reviewed the work adversarially, starting from its own code: it rebuilt the raid math in its own script plus a turn-by-turn rotation simulation. The two agreed within 0.3%. It confirmed every headline with caveats, corrected three thresholds and one unfair comparison, and checked the solo claims under tripled spell power and halved pet damage. The calculator and the level planner on this page are direct ports of the Python models and reproduce them exactly: 54 raid cases, 1,092 raid option checks and 931 leveling cases.
What changed
- v8.6, 4 Oct 2026. Talent builder fixes, thanks to readers on Reddit. The talent description now sits above the trees, and on phones it stays pinned under the section menu while you scroll the tree. The rotation line now reads "Best leveling rotation": the builder scores leveling, one mob at a time, so for raids use the group spec and the raid calculator. A new Group 5/31/15 preset loads the page's group spec at 60 and follows your level below it, taking Demonology to Pact first. No numbers changed.
- v8.5, 2 Oct 2026. Updates for Blizzard's 1 Oct beta notes. Gnome: Eureka! no longer boosts DoTs, so the tip now says to press it after your DoTs, for Drain Life or Shadow Bolt. Used that way it is still worth 0.6 to 1.1% faster leveling from level 30, but nothing while the wand is your filler; pressed on the pull it is worth about 0.3%. Its raid value does not change, because the calculator only ever applied it to filler casts. Soul Harvesting is now called Soul Harvest and gives its 50/100% mana regeneration, which the model already assumed, so the page build still gains nothing from it. Excavation Site: Wetlands is now level 26 to 31 (was 24 to 29). A line under Limits on the new penalty for spell ranks far below your level. No ranking changes.
- v8.4, 1 Oct 2026. The raid calculator now uses the spell ranks a trainer teaches at 60. Shadow Bolt 10, Corruption 7 and Immolate 8 came only from books in Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj, which is not on Forever's roadmap, so they are now a box to tick. Every build does 1 to 2% less and no ranking changes. The level-60 leveling numbers use the trainer ranks too, and the planner now lists Shadow Bolt rank 9 at 60. Test 9 checks for the books.
- v8.3, 1 Oct 2026. A Mage / Warlock switch in the header, for the new Mage page. Links between the two pages carry your race and level. A crafted race link can no longer break the page, and levels 1 to 5 no longer break it either.
- v8.2, 30 Sep 2026. A threat caveat for Demonic Brand in the group spec and test 7, both raised by a reader, and the Soul Harvesting drinking trick marked as hotfixed.
- v8.1, 29 Sep 2026. The group spec is now 5/31/15, a reader's improvement: Suppression's 5% hit covers every spell, so it beats the 0/35/16 version by about 4% when gear alone does not cap hit. Pact takes Suppression too. A note on a reported Touch of the Grave nerf.
- v8, 29 Sep 2026. Closed every modeling gap readers found. The leveling model now has every Destruction spell and talent, Curse of the Elements, Death Coil and finishers, with base damage and coefficients from the beta client; Destruction builds kill faster but rest longer, and lose. A new leveling order, about 2% faster, and an optional solo respec. The raid calculator gained deep Demonology, now the recommended group spec, plus Fire-immune bosses, an execute phase, mana consumables, two targets, Curse of the Elements and mana regen, and Life Tap now reads 430 plus Spirit. A first model of multi-mob pulls. Corrected: Undead leveling 3 to 6% (was 5 to 11%), Troll about 1%, Nightfall under 1% a point, Pact stacking 1 to 3% when you heal the Succubus.
- v7, 29 Sep 2026. Undead's Touch of the Grave now counts in the raid calculator. Casters get a 10% version, not the 5% one this page used, which makes Undead the top raid race by a small margin. New max health slider for Undead. Reported in the Reddit thread, where the same reader tested that applying a DoT triggers it but ticks don't, which is what the model counts.
- v6, 29 Sep 2026. Game icons throughout: talent cells styled like the in-game talent window, race portraits, rotation icons in the level planner, tree icons on specs, raid bars and stat weights. The race now themes the whole page, with a race badge in the section nav. Dungeons got their own section: every dungeon on one level line, filtered to your faction.
- v5, 29 Sep 2026. A talent builder that scores any leveling build next to the page plan, with shareable build links. Race themes that re-tint the page, and colors per talent tree in the builder and the raid chart. Asked for in the Reddit thread.
- v4, 29 Sep 2026. Redesign after a four-reviewer UX pass: section nav, beginner on-ramp and glossary, race and level controls together, a two-column calculator with a gap column, phone tables that stack, a leader strip on phones, and linkable levels such as #lvl-24. From Reddit comments: Troll PvP corrected (Fear into Rapid Regeneration), and a Succubus leveling build with its own test. Numbers unchanged.
- v3, 29 Sep 2026. Stat weights, an item comparer, a gear hit slider, and dungeons in the level planner. Requested in the Reddit thread.
- v2, 29 Sep 2026. Interactive page: race picker, level planner, live raid calculator, test checklist.
- v1, 28 Sep 2026. First published research.
